About Me…
As a guitarist, teacher, and an arranger, Ken Luk actively performs in different solo and chamber music settings. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Ken studied with Dr. Nicholas Goluses and finished his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Eastman School of Music. Prior to his doctoral studies, Ken earned a Master of Art degree in Music Theory Pedagogy at Eastman.
As one of the cofounders of Rochester Classical Guitar, he organizes various events to help promote classical guitar in the Greater Rochester Area. Apart from the monly performing series, the Classical Guitar Night, RCG has presented international touring artists such as Paul Galbraith, Raphaella Smits, and Mark Delpriora.
Ken is an avid arranger of the guitar, and was a finalist in the Roland Dyens Arranging International Competition 2017. Ken performed with double bassist Wanling Chuang at the Experiencing Villa-Lobos Festival, WXXI Live From Hochstein, and Rochester Fringe Festival. As part of the Janus Duo, Ken and guitarist Tom Torrisi have performed extensively around the Upstate New York area and recorded their debut album (due in 2020). Ken also performs and records with guitarists Erik Gibelyou and Bernardo Marcondes Rodrigues as Trio Ghidorah.
Apart from the classical guitar, Ken cofounded the Rochester Mandolin Orchestra in February 2019 and organizes monthly meetings for mandolinists and guitarists of the Greater Rochester Area. Ken has strong interests in and frequently performs music of Brazil, Indonesia, Jamaica, and Zimbabwe. Ken teaches music theory at the Eastman School of Music, guitar and mandolin at Alfred University and SUNY Geneseo, and Balinese gamelan at the Eastman Community Music School and State University of New York at Fredonia.
